-
- SCSI has no real limitations in size (like older IDEs on PC).
- It`s no problem to connect a device to the running system
- if it`s needed and if you have pay attention on some toppics.
-
- SCSI is a bus which is terminated on both ends and is able to support
- a cablelength up to 6m or 24m with special hardware.
-
- IDE is limited dependent on the PIO-Mode you`re using...last mode is good
- for 30-40 centimeters.
-
- SCSI has a much cleaner design. It supports up to 7 units on bus.
- (streamer, scanner, hd, floppy, printers and other stuff.
- The actual SCSI supports rates up to 10MB/s and newer up to 20MB/s
- (but shorter cable, AFAIK). It`s normaly 8-bit wide IDE 16-bit.
- If you want more bits and more problems take EIDE for
- less bits, good working and much higher rates take SCSI!
-
- I don`t want to explain the whole SCSI...there are BIG books...
- Another feature is LUN support...if you take a 7xCD-Changer you`ll
- need only one unit....6 are left (one is used for the "controller" called
- Hostadapter in the computer).
- If you need more than 6 units..there are lunadapter to connect up to
- 6(7) drives to one unit.
-
- The devices for SCSI (CDROM, HD etc.) were better in quality but now you
- have to be carefull to get good components. EIDE has no real good
- components, IMHO...cheap not more. There are many more problems connecting
- different drives to IDE than SCSI...but as I said before, be carefull,
- SCSI has some cheap, worse devices, too.
-
- SCSI is the future...f.e. it`s not possible to connect a Scanner or
- CD-Writer to E-IDE. IDE is lame...do a powerdown with such drive and do
- an access the same time...datacrunch...but no problem with SCSI.
-
- Don`t have a look to the price of the components...have a look on their
- power, quality and price.
-
- harddisk: rounds/sec, accesstime, an cachesize is important
- in my experiences Fujitsu, IBM, HP, DEC and Micropolis
- are cool...Quantum is here and there...
- Maxtor, Conner, Seagate, WD are often lame
- on the other side Baracuda (Seagate) is cool, too
-
- It`s difficult to say globally there are goodies and beasts
-
- cdrom : Plextor and NEC are cool...(Toshiba) and Sony ok, but no caddy
- (very important for GOLDFISHES)
-
- scanner : Epson GT8xxx and HP Scanjet cool....Mustec, Marstek etc. not
- (have a look to hardware resolution...not softwareinterpolated)
-
- ...
-
-
- PS: personal experiences...not more
